Ask the government to end unfair energy debt now

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Add your name to our open letter to ask for an end to unfair energy debt, for everyone, forever.

Last year Australia’s two biggest energy companies, AGL and Origin made $2 billion in profits.

While 331,750 Australian households struggled to pay back more than $300 million in energy debt, as power bills rose again, even while renewables pushed wholesale prices down.

This just isn’t fair. No energy company should be making record profits while people struggle to keep the lights on and stay safe in their homes.

Last year, Stop The Bill Shock called on these energy companies to do the right thing and forgive this unfair debt. They didn’t.3

That’s why we, and a group of civil society and advocacy organisations, are calling on the government to take real steps to help people struggling with high energy bills and end the energy debt cycle forever. Add your name to our open letter now.

We are asking for three interventions:

1.    Forgive energy debt now – to help households get back on track and allow them to access cheaper plans and renewable energy.

2.    Make the energy market more fair – with better market rules and regulations to stop greedy energy companies from inflating retail prices and real support for those struggling to pay.

3.    Cut energy bills for good – by making it easier and more affordable to power our homes with expanded access to home energy upgrades, like rooftop solar and home batteries, insulation and efficient heating and cooling.

It’s time to put people before profit, cut the cycle of debt for good and create an energy system that works for everyone, not just greedy billion-dollar energy corporations.
